Samsung Mondi - Device that Brings WiMAX Service to US

Apr 02, 2009
This week Samsung Mobile announced the launch of its new handheld device with mobile WiMAX. The Mondi is the company's first mobile WiMAX-enabled gadget on the American market.

WiMAX stands for Worldwide Inter-operability for Microwave Access. It is a telecommunications technology offering wireless transfer of information via different transmission means, including portable and mobile internet access. There's no need for cables - with WiMAX users get a broadband speed of up to 3 Mbit/s.

The mobile device features touchscreen technology and was developed to be used with the Clear mobile WiMAX service.

It is worth mentioning that the slider-based gadget runs on Windows Mobile.

Some of the device's features include:

- GPS Navigation (offered by Route 66);

- full QWERTY keyboard;

- full Opera 9.5 browser;

- 3.0 megapixel camera/camcorder;

- Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity;

- 4.3-inch touch-enabled screen.

With Mondi you can use location-based services, and have an instant access to social networking services. In addition, the device supports multiple video and audio player formats, which is definitely a plus.

According to Bill Ogle, Chief Marketing Officer for Samsung Mobile, Samsung Mondi represents a great step toward the aim of finally bringing 4G network speeds to the American continent.

"The Mondi is a great match for people who want immediate access to the Web without having to sacrifice download speed and portability," he said.

The company says that its device will hit stores later this year.
