Handmade solar oven

Jun 16, 2008
If you are dreaming about an oven, but you still can't afford it, then you can do it by yourself! After making some easy actions, you will get your own solar oven from a usual box at least 18" square. Except the box you will also need a few objects, like black construction paper, tin foil, clear plastic, non-toxic glue, pen, tape, scissors, ruler, piece of dowel.
The gadget is really easy and pleasant to do. You may do it with your kids, friends, brothers or sisters. It can become the creation of the whole family.
When you are ready with the tools, check up the following steps.
The depth of the box can be whatever you like. At first, trace a border around the top of your future solar oven, it should be about an inch inside the edges. Cut three sides, but the fourth part will act as a door. Then you need to cut and glue a square of aluminum foil to the underside of the door, and cut a piece of plastic just a little larger than the aperture. That is going to be used as a magnifying glass to have your food fried.
The next step: you should line the bottom of the box with foil and then cover the foil with a piece of black construction paper. After that, fasten it in place.
Now you can place inside your new solar oven your speciality and close the plastic lid. Don't forget to prop open the foil-covered door at an angle that best reflects sunlight through the plastic and into the oven.
Thus, you transform a cardboard box into your own handmade solar oven.
